FAQ: Client port 'xxxx' out of range

Problem: The RPM Remote Print Manager® Log has this entry:

"Warning: Client port 'xxxx' out of range".

Resolution: This is a warning and stops RPM from receiving data from a particular host. Your host system is attempting to send data on a port number that happens to be out of the normal LPR/LPD range. RFC1179 states that the port number must be in the range of 721 to 731.

RPM relaxes this restriction further by accepting data on any port less than 1024 by default. A few host systems today, such as Windows 2000, send data on ports greater than 1024. In order for RPM to receive data on these ports, you must relax the port-in-range requirement.

To relax this restriction in RPM:

  1. Choose either "LPD Security" or "LPD Options" from the "Options" menu in RPM.
  2. Check "Relax the 'port in range' requirement".
  3. You may also check "relax the AF_INET requirement", however, this may not be necessary.
  4. Press "OK" to accept changes and dismiss the dialog.

Now, send a job to RPM. If all goes well, RPM should receive the print job. If not, check the RPM log for any new messages.
