Windows NT 4 printing to a Windows 98 share

Question:

I'm trying to print from RPM Elite or RPM Select running on a Windows NT 4.0 system to a folder shared from Windows 95, 98, or Millennium Edition. The RPM service is running under the local SYSTEM account.

Answer:

RPM will print to a Windows 98 share, but you must add the port manually, instead of allowing the Add Printer Wizard do it for you.

Start by deleting this port from the system.

  1. Choose Start, point to Settings, and click Printers.
  2. Right-click on the printer configured for this port and choose Properties.
  3. In the Ports tab, select a different port such as LPT1:. Press OK to accept the changes and dismiss the dialog.
  4. In the Printers folder, choose Server Properties from the File menu.
  5. Open the Ports tab. Highlight the port (e.g. \\Server\Printer) and press the Delete Port button. Press OK to accept the changes and close the dialog.

Now, you need to add the port manually.

  1. In the Printers folder, right-click the printer and choose Properties.
  2. In the Ports tab, click the Add Port button.
  3. With the Local Port option highlighted, press the New Port button.
  4. Type the location of the share, (e.g. \\Server\Printer). Then press the Apply button.
  5. Make sure the printer has a check next to the port you just created and press OK.

You should now enable the queue in RPM. You can do this by highlighting the appropriate queue and removing the check next to Suspended on the right side of the Queue List window. The problem should now be resolved.
