Common Printing Problems (RPM)
Problems:
To help diagnose problems and provide an activity record, RPM Remote Print Manager® maintains a log and provides a window to it. The window is open by default in RPM version 2.2 and subsequent versions. To view the log, press the datestamp.log (ex. 19991007.log) tab at the bottom of the RPM program window. If it is closed for some reason, select "Log" from the "View" menu. This window will contain a number of entries from RPM startup, including version information for RPM and Windows Sockets.
Possible Solutions:
RPM doesn't print
- Is your print client connecting to RPM?
- Whenever RPM is contacted for any reason it creates a log entry similar to "Information: Request from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx". If you don't see an message like this, or something similar, your print client is probably not getting through to the PC. You can try the telnet test to make sure. Please contact your network administrator for assistance.
- Are you using the right queue name?
- Requests that come to RPM include a queue name. RPM cannot print the data if you have not defined this particular queue name. If this queue name is not configured already, RPM creates a new queue name, then suspends the queue. You must configure the queue to print to a specific printer before you can resume this queue.
- Are you using a version of RPM prior to version 2.2.4.0?
- If you are using a previous version of RPM, some of the best features are not included, such as automatic queue creation described above. You need to download and upgrade to the newest version. If you have kept your Software Upgrade Maintenance current, you can upgrade for no additional charge. If not, there is a fee for the upgrade.
- The log files says "Error: Unable to print to 'printer'".
- The most likely causes are that the printer or port definition is wrong, or that the print driver can't be loaded. Our first suggestion is to see if you can send a Windows test page to the printer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to Start\Settings\Printers.
- Right-click on the printer, select "Properties".
- In the "General" tab of the printer properties, press the "Print Test Page" button.
Also, Windows may temporarily be unable to talk to the printer. Later versions of RPM have more diagnostic capabilities, so download the newest version by clicking the link on the above step.
