How to view the RPM NT 2.3.0.2 logfile

Question:

When I try to open the RPM Remote Print Manager™ for Windows NT logfile using a different program, such as Microsoft Excel, all I see is garbage. What application(s) can I open the logfiles in?

Answer:

The newest version of RPM for Windows 2000/NT can view previous logfiles, but not from RPM 2.3. Download RPM for Windows 2000/NT here.

You cannot open the RPM/NT logfiles in a different application other than RPM, unless you first save it in that particular format before-hand. There are 2 ways to view RPM logfiles. Here are the instructions.

1. Save the file you need to view in the logfiles directory (usually C:\Program Files\Brooks Internet Software\RPM\logfiles).
2. Open this directory in the Windows Explorer.
3. Rename todays logfile with a different extension. Rename example: '19991029.log' to '19991029.old'.
4. Rename the received logfile to todays date with a '.log' extension. Rename example: 'other_log_file' to '19991029.log'.
5. Access the Services applet in the control panel.
   • Go to Start\Settings\Control Panel.
   • Double-click 'Services'.
6. Scroll down and select 'RPM Remote Print Manager'.
7. Press the 'Stop' button and wait for Windows NT to stop the RPM service.
8. Now, press the 'Start' button and wait again until the service is started.
9. Finally, open the RPM UI to view the logfile.
   • Go to Start\Programs\RPM NT Workstation or Server and click the 'RPM UI' shortcut.
   • From the 'Window' menu, choose the log window. Using the above example, it would say '19991029.log'.

The following instructions explain how to save the logfile in a different application or format.

1. Access the RPM log by choosing the log window from the 'Window' menu in RPM.
2. From the 'Edit' menu, choose 'Copy' or simply press CTRL+C.
3. Open another application to import the contents of the clipboard such as Microsoft Excel.
4. From the 'Edit' menu of Excel, choose 'Paste' or press CTRL+V.
5. You should now see the contents of the logfile in your application.
6. Finally, save the document in the format of your choice.
