Error 0193: %1 is not a valid Windows Application

Problem:

When I try to start the RPM Remote Print Manager™ user interface (UI), I get a message stating

RPM Fatal Error: Cannot connect to service!

If I go to the Control Panel Services applet to start the RPM service, I get a message stating:

Could not start the RPM Remote Print Manager service on \\SERVER. Error 0193: %1 is not a valid Windows NT Application.

Solution:

This seems to be a remote problem that doesn't occur very often. The Microsoft KB article Q134425 describes the problem and also the solution. The problem is that in a certain registry key, the path to the RPM service file contains spaces in it and there is no quotation marks around it.

If you do not wish to modify the registry, you can try another solution:

  1. Uninstall RPM
  2. Re-install RPM to a directory without spaces, such as C:\RPMNT

Note: Verify that the path in the registry is pointing to the correct folder where RPM is installed.
