RPM suspends the queue when it receives a print job

Problem:

I installed the newest version of RPM Remote Print Manager™ for Windows NT, version 3.0. Now when I send a print job to RPM, the queue is suspended. In the log, I see event 447 and a message stating

RPM needs Full Access to printer 'HP LaserJet 4' 0x5 : Access is denied.

What can I do to start printing again?

Resolution:

This error is a result of changes we made to RPM/NT version 3.0. The user account that RPM is running under needs to have full access to the printer you are trying to print to. This was done as a result of RPM needing full access to set the correct user name for the print job. Here are instructions for giving full access to the printer.

First, you need to see what user you are running the account under.

  1. Choose Start\Settings\Control Panel. Double-click the "Services" icon.
  2. Scroll down and find "RPM Remote Print Manager". Now highlight this choice.
  3. Press the Startup button. Under "Log on as:", you will see the user account RPM is using. Note: By default, this is set to the SYSTEM account.

Now to give full access to the printer.

  1. Choose Start\Settings\Printers
  2. Right-click on the printer, and choose "Properties".
  3. Select the "Security" tab and press the "Permissions" button.
  4. Click "Add" and add the SYSTEM account.
  5. Under "Type of Access", choose "Full Control".
  6. Now press OK and close all boxes pertaining to the printer.

You should now be able to print to the proper printer.

Notes: You only need to give the RPM User account full access to the printer. It does not matter who, or how many users, print using RPM. When you give this account full access to the printer, RPM can now do what needs to be done.

Also, if the RPM NT service will be printing to any shared resources (Printers or Files), please click here for more information.
