CUPS - Setup and Configuration Guide

To configure CUPS to successfully print to RPM, you need to create a UNIX printer (LPD) using the CUPS administration tool. For these instructions, we will assume that the IP address of the RPM PC is 192.168.1.35. Contact your system administrator for information on your computer.

Creating a Queue in RPM

  1. Open the RPM user interface and choose New Queue from the Queues menu.
  2. Enter the name of the queue you wish to create and press the OK button. The Edit Queues dialog will be displayed.

  3. From the list of Queue Types, choose Pass data directly to the printer (raw). *

  4. Press the Printer Setup button. In the Print Setup dialog, choose a printer from the list of available printers. Press the OK button.

  5. In the Edit Queues dialog, press the Queue Setup button. Select Translate LF to CR/LF and press the OK button.

  6. Press the OK button to accept the changes and dismiss the Edit Queues dialog.

Note: Choose a queue type consistant with your requirements. You can try both the Text and Filter queue types. All three types perform specific actions. To learn more about the different types of queues, click here.

Configuring a CUPS UNIX printer (LPD)

  1. To begin, we suggest performing a telnet test to RPM which will verify your UNIX server can connect to RPM properly. At a command prompt on your CUPS server, issue the following command. Be sure to substitute the IP address of your RPM computer where appropriate.

  2. Next, check the RPM log to verify you have received the same message. If this message appears, the server running CUPS can successfully connect to RPM. Although this message is a warning, no action should be taken now. RPM is working properly.

  3. Now, start the CUPS administration tool. You can use either the graphical or command line tool depending on your system configuration and installed programs. Note that your CUPS administration tool may look different than the figures displayed here.

  4. From the Printer menu, choose Add Printer or select the New Printer icon. The Add a Printer wizard is displayed.
  5. In Printer Type, select Network Printer. The type of network printer will be UNIX printer (LPD). Once this is selected, you can enter your RPM host computer's IP address in the Host field and the RPM queue name in the Queue field.

  6. In the next step, choose the type of printer. We recommend selecting a raw printer without a filter (print driver). This should ensure plain text data is sent to RPM.

  7. The final steps prompts you for information about the printer. The Name field is the name of the printer as known on your UNIX server. The other fields are informational only and may be omitted.

  8. If you would like to test this printer, enter the following command at the prompt: lpr -P rpm path/to/file.

Congratulations: You have now successfully configured CUPS to print through your RPM computer. If you have different users logging in, you may modify their profile to make this the default printer.
