RPM Installation and Setup Guide for Windows NT 4.0

Prior to installing RPM on your computer, you must log in as the Administrator account or another account that is a member of the Administrators group.

Note: RPM requires Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, or Server 2003. Service pack 6a is required on Windows NT. We recommend the latest security patches be installed on whatever platform you are running.

Step-by-Step Installation

RPM is distributed with a Windows setup program, which guides you through the installation process on your computer. The setup program installs and configures all files required to operate the software.

Here is the step-by-step installation process

  1. Run the setup program downloaded from our website or the single file executable located on the installation CD.
  2. At the Welcome screen, click Next.
  3. License Agreement After reading and agreeing to the terms of the end-user license agreement, choose I accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next to proceed. If you do not accept the terms, setup will not continue.
  4. Choose Destination Location Choose the destination folder for RPM and click Next. The default folder is RPMElite or RPMSelect, a subfolder of C:\Program Files\Brooks Internet Software.

  5. Select Features This step allows you to install the Remote Print Administrator (RPA) module. This module allows you to configure RPM remotely using a web browser and is available only with RPM Elite.

Note: This step is skipped if Internet Information Services (IIS) is not installed on your computer. If you have not yet installed IIS and wish to use RPA, cancel the installation now and rerun setup after IIS has been installed.

  6. Select Program Folder Choose a program folder. The default program folder is RPM Elite or RPM Select. When you click Next, RPM will be installed on your computer.

  7. InstallShield Wizard Complete Click the Finish button to complete the installation. In certain circumstances, setup may prompt you to restart your computer. If so, choose Yes.

RPM is now installed on your computer. The next time Windows is restarted, the RPM service will start automatically. There is no need to place a shortcut to RPM in your startup folder.

The RPM Service Account

By default, the RPM service is configured to run as the local SYSTEM account. This account is a special Windows account that has full access to your local computer only. If your security policy requires, or if you need access to shared resources (printers or folders), you must configure the RPM service to run as a user account, preferrably an Administrator account, with permissions to the shared resources.

  1. Open the Windows Start menu, point to the Settings menu, and choose Control Panel. Now, open the Services utility.
  2. Highlight the RPM Remote Print Manager service and press the Stop button. Wait for the service to completely stop. Press the Startup button.

  3. Under the Log On As section, select This Account and press the ... button.

  4. In the Add User dialog, choose the appropriate domain from the List Names From list and select your user account. Press the Add button. The user will be displayed in the Add Name field. Now press the OK button.

  5. In the Service dialog (shown in step three), type the user account's password in both the Password and Confirm Password fields. Press the OK button to accept the changes and dismiss the dialog.
  6. In the Services window (shown in step two), press the Start button and wait for the service to start completely. Once started, close the Services utility and the Control Panel.

Registry Permissions

The final step gives this user account full access permissions to the registry. This is done from the Registry Editor. If you select an administrator account, this step is not necessary.

Note: Improper use of the registry editor could damage your system or even make it unbootable.

  1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Run, type "regedt32", without the quotes, and press OK.

  2. Open the HKey_Local_Machine on local machine window.
  3. Double-click Software and highlight the Brooks Internet Software key.
  4. From the Security menu, choose Permissions.

  5. Add the user account that the RPM service is configured to run as. Give this account Full Control permissions. Check the Replace Permission on Existing Subkeys checkbox and press the OK button.

Configure RPM

Now that the RPM Remote Print Manager service has been installed and configured, you must configure at least one queue to receive and process jobs. To open the RPM User Interface (UI), open the Windows Start menu, then the Programs menu, and finally the RPM Elite or RPM Select menu. Click RPM to open the RPM UI. Note: If you installed RPM to an alternate Program Group, open that folder to access the RPM shortcut.

  1. If this is the first time starting RPM, the Create a Queue dialog will be displayed. If not, select New Queue from the Queues menu. Type a descriptive name for the queue containing any combination of letters, numbers, and the dash (-) and underscore (_) characters. Click OK.

  2. This will display the Edit Queues dialog. There are 3 queue types available, each performs a specific function. Click here or review the manual for detailed information about queue types.

  3. Click the Printer Setup button. Select the printer you want this queue to print incoming jobs to and press the OK button.

Note: If you have chosen a filter type queue, the Printer Setup button will be disabled. If so, skip this step.

  4. Now you need to configure the queue. Press the Queue Setup button, which will take you to the queue setup dialog based on your queue type selection. Configure the options needed in your environment and press OK.
