Sun Solaris Setup Instructions for RPM

To configure your Sun Solaris box to successfully print to RPM Remote Print ManagerŪ, you need to "add access to a printer" using the "Solaris Print Manager". For these instructions, the IP address of the PC running RPM is 192.168.1.53. A DNS name may also be used. Contact your system administrator for information on your computer configuration.

Creating a Queue in RPM

  1. Open the RPM user interface and choose New Queue from the Queues menu.
  2. Enter the name of the queue you wish to create and press the OK button. The Edit Queues dialog will be displayed.

  3. From the list of Queue Types, choose Pass data directly to the printer (raw). *

  4. Press the Printer Setup button. In the Print Setup dialog, choose a printer from the list of available printers. Press the OK button.

  5. In the Edit Queues dialog, press the Queue Setup button. Select Translate LF to CR/LF and press the OK button.

  6. Press the OK button to accept the changes and dismiss the Edit Queues dialog.

Note: Choose a queue type consistant with your requirements. You can try both the Text and Filter queue types. All three types perform specific actions. To learn more about the different types of queues, click here.

Adding Access to a Printer in Sun Solaris

  1. Now perform a telnet test to see if your network is properly configured. From a command prompt on the Solaris box, issue the command "telnet 192.168.1.53 515". Be sure to substitute the IP address of your RPM PC.

  2. Next, view the RPM log and verify that the message has been logged. The message should be displayed near the bottom and is a warning stating: "Client port xxxx out of range". If this message was not logged, the Solaris server may be connecting to another LPD. Check your network settings or firewall for correct configuration.

  3. Now, open the "Solaris Print Manager". This is a graphical tool for the Common Desktop Environment that Solaris boxes currently use.

  4. From the 'Printer' menu, choose "Add Access to Printer".

  5. Type the RPM queue name in the "Printer Name" edit box, and your IP address in the "Print Server" edit box. Remember to substitute your information where applicable. If this is the default printer, you can check this box. Now press OK.

  6. Now, back in the main "Solaris Print Manager" dialog box, you should see this new printer listed.

  7. If you would like to test this printer, you can execute the command shown in the graphic below.

Congratulations, you have now successfully configured Sun Solaris to print to RPM. If you have different users logging in, you may need to modify their profile.
