Printer limit exceeded, and how to raise the limit

The symptoms

Two different symptoms have the same cause. In the message log you see:

Printer limit exceeded for queue 'queue name', printer 'xxxxx'

Or a job sits in Wait status and never prints. Check the log and you will usually find the message above.

Either one means RPM has been asked to use more devices in this run than your license allows. It is not a fault in the print job or the queue — RPM stops before reserving a device it is not licensed for. See what the device limit is for the count that applies to your edition, and what device reservations mean for how RPM counts them.

Raising the limit

RPM Select is limited to 10 devices. If you have RPM Select and want to print to more printers than that, get in touch about converting your license to RPM Elite. RPM Elite has three options for device limits: 99, 249, and unlimited devices.

To increase the RPM Elite printer limit above 99:

  1. Open the Brooks License Manager in the RPM Program group or choose License from the software’s Help menu.
  2. Open the Module Status tab and double-click RPM Printers. Follow the wizard, selecting Internet activation option.
  3. Enter your invoice or sales receipt number, the auth code you were provided, and the number of printers you purchased, and click Next.
  4. A success dialog will appear if your activation was successful.

Note: If you purchase an unlimited printer license for RPM Elite, enter 0 (zero) for quantity. Zero means “no limit”.
