RPM Development Roadmap

This page lists the features added and issues resolved in each RPM Remote Print Manager® (“RPM”) build, beginning with version 5 and continuing through the current RPM version.

Features and improvements are customer-driven. Please get in touch with us for any feature enhancement ideas or needs.

6.2.0.604 on 2026-06-05 (Release)

• All RPM data folders now follow the user-selected settings directory from setup rather than defaulting to the All Users Profile.
• Fixed a startup sequencing problem where queue and job modules attempted to use the Spool and Jobs folders before they were created
• The service now detects when the database has been moved to a new location and automatically re-derives folder paths rather than honoring stale settings from the previous location.  The folder contents, however, are not moved.
• Default database connection type is now Direct rather than Pipes for new installations
• Fixed multi-job AppSocket streams where a PJL document boundary could cause the second job to be lost or merged into the first
• Added named slot identification to the callback system to improve diagnostic logging

6.2.0.603 on 2026-05-30 (Release)

• Fixed character encoding in several components so that non-Latin characters (accented, Asian, etc.) are handled correctly rather than producing garbled text.
• Fixed PDF attachments sent by RPM not opening in Apple Mail on iPhone and other clients.
• Fixed a startup sequencing issue that could leave device 0 stuck in an initializing state.
• Corrected database generator counters for alerts and FTP servers so new records are numbered correctly after migration.

6.2.0.602 on 2026-05-22 (Release)

• Doing a queue purge or deleting large numbers of jobs now works in seconds rather than hours
• Added an automated task to RPM, which runs at midnight:
  • we added a REPORTS folder along side SPOOL, TEMP, the RPM database and other key folders
  • in the REPORTS folder we create reports in several text files,
  • we also proactively run several Firebird commands for the health of the RPM database, and provide statistics
  • this automated task also flushes MSGLOG entries and creates a CSV file in a ZIP file for each day MSGLOG entries exist
  • in future versions we may assess the MSGLOG for optimal times to run this, and we may support the Windows task scheduler; those options are not currently available
• When we need to impersonate a user, communicate the “working directory” to the process without affecting the rest of the RPM processing
• Argument parsing improved in ‘csmtp’ program
• DNS lookups in ‘clpr’ now default to IPv4 since LPD print servers are not generally IPv6 servers
• Simplified the way incoming jobs and requests are queued to disk, which seems to solve occasional problems where the work flow stopped
• Dropped several low impact indices from the database, which simply consumed resources when we had a large number of MSGLOG entries
• Removed unused optimizations from the priority manager
• MSGLOG cleanup is now handled by the automated task described above, not a 7-day query where MSGLOG entries are tied to jobs that still exist
• Fixed problems with several timer tags, including hourly timers which were improperly named
• Fixed page start problems when printing Unicode text

6.2.0.601 on 2026-04-15 (Release)

• Text Printer: Fixed single-page jobs without a trailing form feed not printing, two entries appearing in Windows print queue per job, and the Windows print queue now shows the correct job owner instead of SYSTEM
• PDFGen: Text Markup to PDF now supports more fonts
• GUI: Database read queries now commit their transactions, preventing long-lived open transactions that blocked garbage collection.
• Improved Message Log cleanup query efficiency
• CodePage: added Unicode Private Use Area (PUA) character support
• Fixed job parameters and overrides being re-applied on subsequent job updates
• Removed unnecessary high priority setting from action finish processing
• Fixed potential use-after-free in protocol factory recycling

6.2.0.600 on 2026-04-05 (Release)

• Fixed a startup failure on Windows versions prior to Windows 10 1607 caused by a dependency on SetThreadDescription.  The function is now loaded dynamically and silently skipped on older systems.
• Hardened SQL argument handling in LPD protocol, Job Manager, Device Manager, and utility functions against SQL injection vulnerabilities.
• Fixed a UI refresh issue where jobs copied via the Copy Queue action did not appear in the job list. The job name was not being included in the notification sent to connected clients.
• Text Printer again displays a watermark on every page when running in trial mode. The watermark is automatically sized to fit the printable area and renders as an outline so the underlying text remains readable.
• Text Printer and Raw Printer now abort the job if no data is written to the Windows printer preventing empty zero-byte jobs from appearing in the Windows print queue.
• Fixed a buffer overrun in Text Printer when processing font face names longer than the LOGFONT field allows.
• Host Access settings now offer three modes: Allow all hosts, Allow all except listed, and Deny all except listed.  Previously only a single enable/disable toggle was available.
• Hosts can now be specified using CIDR notation (e.g. 192.168.1.0/24) in addition to individual IP addresses and hostnames.

6.2.0.599 on 2026-04-28 (Release)

• The thread priority was incorrectly set in the Archive to Folder action, which was causing thread starvation if RPM was doing anything else besides saving a job to disk.
• Balanced scheduler optimizations.
• Networking updates:
  • for our network testing program ’netcat’ we added a mode to wrap a file in a proper PJL envelope, to test the AppSocket protocol
  • netcat also supports the job name if it’s not the same as the filename, and a username argument if it’s not the logged in user
  • we can now pass a queue name to the LPR test program rather than relying on ’lp’
  • for the LPR action, we can now specify the job title, specify a hostname for job origin, specify job and title for the control file
• additions to the AppSocket protocol:
  • openjob() is deferred until actual job data arrives, addressing discrepancies if the user is doing this interactively
  • correctly handles INFO, INFO STATUS
  • handles raw PCL
• replaced the home-grown command line parser with a module designed to do that well
• added instance counters for a number of database objects for more realistic logging and debugging
• we can now track current memory usage
• optimized numerous SQL commands to use bound parameters, saving memory in the database space and increasing throughput
• rather than all database operations going through a single channel, we now support 3 concurrent channels for MSGLOG, for “end of action” processing, and everything else; these also happen in their own threads
• we replaced our Python LPR client with a C++ version; also the FTP and email clients
• our new FTP client does “keepalive” with the connection to the remote FTP server; also supports secure transfer via TLS. Failed jobs are removed from cycling. We also no longer log an error after a successful transfer.
• our program ‘dbmigrate’ which is used to migrate an existing Firebird database to a new copy, is now C++ rather than Python
• the “send via raw connection” program now uses a 120-second timeout
• default to “127.0.0.1” if no hostname is specified
• fixed several situations that caused the job cache to grow indefinitely
• the JSON parser now returns an empty JSON if we get “{}”
• the priority manager now removes duplicate priorities on startup, rather than forcing an invisible SQL error
• fixed several runtime errors encountered with the MSGLOG table resulting from inconsistencies in the SQL code
• improved handling for certain SQL errors in the Launcher code
• refined the status of jobs in the JobCache, are they in the database, or are they in memory; helping to resolve a long term memory leak
• we now support “direct” as an option for accessing the database; for new installs it will be the default. This is an important step in our migration to Firebird 5.0
• based on our years of experience with the old python LPR program we wrote, pylpr, the new program clpr uses the argument filename in the control file, even though it is not “standard”
• new and improved EULA in the install program
• crash reports are now saved as ZIP files in the “Crash Reports” folder under RPM’s install folder, easy for client to forward to us
• we expunged several antiquated code modules which were no longer supported
• we now provide an SBOM document to the NIST project for tracking software library issues
• added thread-name support for tools that can display that, as well as logging
• stopping RPM now takes only a few seconds, as opposed to thirty-plus seconds

6.2.0.598 on 2026-04-08 (Release)

• If critical files cannot be overwritten during installation, setup now completes successfully and prompts for a reboot instead of ignoring.
• Networking updates:
  • Replaced a legacy TCP/IP DNS resolver for more reliable DNS look-ups.
  • Improved memory safety across networking modules when handling socket file objects.
  • Socket protocol objects are now managed with shared pointers, preventing use-after-free errors on connection tear down.
• Fixed a bug in the timer event listener that could cause timer callbacks to malfunction.
• Added a RingBuffer subsystem that records a rolling trace of activity across all modules, providing better context when diagnosing unhandled exceptions.
• Fixed several action modules that were incorrectly reading queue ID from the wrong source.
• Fixed a bug in balanced scheduling where jobs could be dispatched to devices that were over capacity or in an error state.
• Replaced the Python-based email utility with a native C++ implementation using libcurl, bringing modern TLS 1.2/1.3 support and faster startup. It also correctly handles implicit TLS on port 465 (smtps://) and STARTTLS on other ports.

6.2.0.597 on 2026-04-01 (Release)

• Replaced pjlquery and dlltest programs with native C++ executables which is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the installer size and eliminate third-party runtime dependencies.
• Removed a third-party base64 library dependency from several components, replacing it with a lightweight custom implementation.
• Fixed a crash that could occur when closing the RPM user interface under certain conditions.
• Fixed a fault in the socket file object handler where closing the UI could trigger an access violation due to a socket handle not being properly initialized to an invalid state.
• PCL tray mapping received three corrections: summary line formatting was producing malformed output, the media source lookup was using an empty key rather than the matched tray code, and output bin changes now log correctly alongside tray changes.
• Message log processing now drains up to 100 queued file paths per pass when handling high-volume logging, improving
   throughput under heavy load.
• Queue manager query logic was optimized to avoid unnecessary repeated database reads.
• Several internal member variables were renamed to follow consistent naming conventions and avoid potential confusion between local and class-scope variables.
• Jobs are now handled more safely during service shutdown to reduce the chance of incomplete state at exit.

6.2.0.596 on 2026-03-26 (Release)

• On a fresh install, the spool folder was failing to be set correctly which led to problems receiving print jobs
• a reference was maintained incorrectly in the raw print handler, which meant that it failed to show that the job was processed
• in a test scenario, the RPC ‘add-job’ handler failed to properly exclude zero length jobs
• In a “job flood” situation where jobs were sent faster than RPM could process them (which we plan for) some job updates were not communicated properly with the user interface, which made it seem as if some jobs were orphaned when in fact, they were not. Note that we recognize RPM is a spooler, not just a print server, and plan in advance to receive more jobs than we can process. It’s just the interface with the GUI that wasn’t keeping up.
• Added a way to check on currently print jobs, when the user wants to shut down RPM, to keep from orphaning active prints if possible
• Identified and fixed several situations where network connections weren’t closing cleanly, again under heavy load

6.2.0.595 on 2026-03-05 (Release)

• Expired jobs are now cleaned up after the job manager has fully started, avoiding a potential ordering problem during service startup.
• The job-remove RPC command had been inadvertently dropped, so removing more than 25 jobs from the UI was not working.
• The job-rename handler had a missing parameter that prevented it from working correctly. This has been corrected.
• Jobs using copy-based retention were sometimes evaluated against stale data at completion time. RPM now uses the correct values, so retention behavior is now more predictable.
• Leading whitespace on centered text fields is now trimmed along with trailing whitespace, giving cleaner extracted values.
• When extracting data from print jobs containing overprint sequences (bare carriage returns), RPM now correctly retains only the final overprint pass rather than stripping the carriage returns outright. This should produce more accurate extraction from reports that use overprinting.
• Top Offset for image overlays. Previously, a negative value moved the image down the page; the opposite what we intended. The corrected behavior now treats Top Offset as a true top-down measurement: a positive value moves the image down, and a negative value moves it up.

6.2.0.594 on 2026-02-26 (Release)

This release represents four months of architectural improvements - longer than our typical 4-6 week cycle. The extended timeline reflects the scope of foundational work we undertook to improve reliability, performance, and enterprise integration.

Key Improvements

Network Layer Hardening

We resolved a critical issue where network security scanners (such as Nessus and similar tools) could exhaust RPM’s connection pool. These scanners open and close connections faster than RPM could process them, eventually preventing RPM from accepting legitimate print jobs. The symptom: RPM would stop accepting connections and require a service restart.

The fix addresses the root cause and, as a side benefit, improved overall network performance. If you’ve experienced mysterious connection failures that resolved after restarting RPM, this update eliminates that problem.

Windows Event Log Integration

RPM now writes comprehensive operational events to the Windows Event Viewer throughout the application. This enables enterprise monitoring tools (Splunk, SIEM systems, and other log aggregators) to track RPM operations without custom log parsing. Events include:

• Critical system events
• Action and transform updates
• Queue state changes
• Database errors
• License status information

Modern User Session Tracking

We replaced Windows 7-era login tracking APIs with current Windows session management. The practical benefits:

• RPM reliably detects logged-in users at service startup without waiting for login/logout cycles
• Interactive processes and user-specific actions start working immediately
• More accurate domain user tracking and credential management
• Better security: passwords are now decrypted in place rather than cached

If you run interactive processes or actions under specific user credentials, this update provides significantly more reliable behavior.

Reliability and Code Modernization

Extensive internal refactoring focused on thread safety, performance, and maintainability:

• Callback System Rewrite: Completely rebuilt our internal callback system across 291 integration points. This eliminates subtle race conditions that could cause jobs to stall under heavy load, providing more predictable job processing in high-volume environments.
• Simplified Startup: Eliminated complex interdependencies ordering that occasionally caused initialization issues. RPM now starts more reliably and predictably.
• Job Submission Streamlining: Consolidated job creation logic across all protocols (LPD, Telnet, AppSocket). Jobs are now queued and submitted consistently, with better throughput. We no longer scan the JOBS folder except at startup, reducing disk I/O.
• Security Updates: Upgraded Crypto++ encryption library from version 5.6.5 (2011) to 8.9 (current). This addresses known vulnerabilities in our encryption, hashing, and credential management.
• Code Quality: Eliminated 434 instances of legacy library patterns, replaced complex dependency management with clearer initialization systems, and improved error handling throughout.

Additional Updates

• Action Manager: Modernized with near-instantaneous lookups even with large numbers of actions
• User Interface Synchronization: Better RPC support for UI operations including user management, action modifications, and job status updates
• Job Properties: Characters per inch and lines per inch can now be fractional; characters per line and lines per page remain whole numbers
• Message Logging: Several logging functions now cache entries until dependent systems are started, preventing startup ordering issues

Technical Details

• Discovered and fixed network protocol handling where connection close events could occur before RPM responded, putting the service in a degraded state
• Updated RPC protocol to support standalone programs adding jobs
• Added built-in width and indent support to native job data
• Queue creation logic now properly handles permissions and dynamic queue creation across all protocols
• Improved database exception handling for upgrades from very old RPM versions

Note: If you experience any issues loading this version with databases from significantly older RPM installations, please contact technical support. We’ve addressed the known upgrade paths, but legacy database schemas may require analysis.

6.2.0.593 on 2025-10-15 (Release)

• The main project was the text print action. We have essentially rewritten it from the ground up. Here are highlights:
  1. The following should work correctly together or independently: print all pages, skip blank pages, print only page ranges
  2. Watermark image files can now be any mainstream format, such as PNG, JPG, GIF, and others
  3. We’ve tested placing images over the text and under, and both work
  4. We now place images on the page in the physical area, even if it’s outside the printable margins
  5. In fact, setting document margins to zero works, although if the printer has a margin, the result may be clipped; this means we can design full-page images and have the combined results (with text) work correctly
  6. Printable text width and height are now set correctly, based on margins
  7. Use the font size specified by the user unless it needs to be scaled down
  8. Use more precise font sizes based on characters per line and/or lines per inch, lines per page
  9. We’ve tested line wrap at length with both ASCII and UTF-8 documents
• In text to PDF, images are no longer added twice in two different locations in landscape mode
• Copy to queue now shows the correct data file size, whether the queue name was determined via data extraction tags, or not
• The installation process now allows you to specify a destination for the database and key directories
• The LPD module is more careful about dealing with errors, such as “can’t create this queue because that option is turned off” and closing out the job correctly
• Fixed an error occasionally encountered with the Priority Manager when adding items to check

6.2.0.591 on 2025-09-15 (Beta)

• Essentially rewrote the COR module; it now produces predictable results
• Certain control characters were being removed from LPD control files; we now test the contents of control files against UTF-8, Latin1, and the local codepage before removing bytes
• Updated the JOBS schema to allow for more robust field lengths in some instances, since modern LPR clients seem to rarely follow the original specification
• Error message cleanup in the networking code
• We now validate UTF-8 more thoroughly
• We are now getting updates on the locations of the spool, temp, and overlay folders on startup, rather than assuming a default location

6.2.0.590 on 2025-06-18 (Release)

• During installation and updates, we might execute the RPM service as a command line, with options. That was not returning as expected, nor showing the results of commands. That is fixed.
• Timers now support fractional seconds, as occasionally jobs that were created very close together were not always removed if specified by job retention.
• Telnet and appsocket protocols now use a localized thread for timers, which makes “quiet print” work much more precisely and reliably
• In the appsocket protocol, if the printer definition included a TIMEOUT directive (as many do) this was not being correctly parsed. That was fixed. If the timeout value is present, it should take precedence over the UI setup.
• Greatly improved the appsocket’s ability to correctly parse the beginning and end of a JetDirect-style print job. It’s impossible to test this for all JetDirect clients, but if they adhere to HP’s documentation, we should see good results.
• Security-related updates:
  • Updated FirewallManager to prevent creating a UDP firewall exception
  • The TCP firewall exception is now enable for all network profiles by default
  • Added firewall exception to prevent outside RPC access (RPM’s internal RPC), allowing local UI connections only
  • disabled “auto-create queue” by default
  • Added a form to the UI to change the SYSDBA password for the database
  • The database maintenance routines, including the batch files, now use this custom password
• Added a “test9100.bat” script to test Telnet or Appsocket on port 9100
• Resolved an issue during installation that incorrectly parsed the fixdb.bat file for the SYSDBA password

6.2.0.589 on 2025-06-17 (Beta)

6.2.0.588 on 2025-05-27 (Release)

• Found and fixed the thread that was consuming all available CPU. If you had a 16-core machine, it wasn’t such a hit, but on a 1 or 2-core machine, it was pretty troublesome.
• The PCL Banner transform was missing settings from the dialog in the UI.

6.2.0.587 on 2025-05-19 (Release)

• The Copy Queue action was copying the job file correctly, but in some circumstances, it was marked in the UI as being an empty file, when in fact it had the correct size.
• Made extensive revisions to reclaim memory
• Increased the efficiency of the process that looks for files to process
• Added basic status messages to the system message log for transforms. Now, if there is an issue, you have some history to review for the job processing.
• Also cleaned up the action message logs.
• We now simplify the handling of temp files created while processing jobs.
• When RPM is running a program as part of transform or action, it wasn’t logging that the executable path no longer exists (assuming it didn’t). That is fixed.
• For LPD, we now do extensive processing on the control file, which includes the job name, plus title and other text that may not be “plain ASCII”. We now explicitly handle UTF-8 and the Latin-1 code page, aka ISO-8859-1. These two code pages explicitly use high-bit characters differently.
• We also support using the host machine’s code page for translating text, if the other methods are not productive.
• We have an upgraded RPC for adding a job to RPM. Among other things, you can pass in a host value and a username, or the RPC code will now use the hostname from the client connection.
• Inbound LPD jobs no longer populate the start and finish times, as that is a function of job processing
• Some of the settings for telnet jobs managed to be erased so it was possible under some circumstances for the telnet processing to create an entry for “telnet port zero”
• In the UI, we fixed the “Purge All” button in the Critical Events window.

6.2.0.586 on 2025-04-18 (Release)

• The Timer function is significantly refactored. We could show a bottleneck when we had a large number of jobs that were set to expire in the future, and if something prevented that (maybe the service was taken down for database maintenance) then job removal would be significantly delayed.
• The Timer interface is simplified, so the LPD and Telnet protocols are revised accordingly.
• The Queue manager code now handles “keep maximum # of jobs” logic directly. If the job retention is set to “max-jobs” and the max-jobs value is greater than zero, then we store a list of job IDs in “created” order so we can easily remove the one(s) that pass our retention threshold. This process is much more streamlined than what we were doing before. This logic is initiated at job completion time.
• The job launcher was not properly marking a job as “complete” if any of the actions were disabled. This is resolved. Job status ‘Disabled’ is now handled properly along with the other possible job status values.
• Streamlined the diagnostic log manager, to better handle a multi-threaded environment and to optimize for the majority of log settings that don’t change during execution.
• Added more explicit data cleanup to better manage memory usage.
• If you had a Copy Queue action in a queue that included a transform, and let’s say that transform changes the data size of the print job (e.g., text to text markup), then the Copy Queue action created the new job with the same data size (as shown in the UI) as the original job. The actual result job was the correct size on disk; only the UI was misleading. This is fixed.

6.2.0.585 on 2025-04-05 (Release)

• Error status for protocol ports is clearly marked
• Extensive work on “job status” for queues that have more than one action, one of which might error, one might be complete and another has not even run yet. Starting now:
  • jobs are only marked “complete” when all actions are complete
  • jobs with error status on any action are marked “error”
  • jobs where not all actions have finished, one way or another, are not marked
• Email actions were being marked “error” even though they completed successfully

6.2.0.584 on 2025-03-26 (Release)

• Extensive renovation on the status messages for the PclTray transform, to show numbers of times that trays or bins were reset
• Added BlueTooth and Wi-Fi Direct adapters to the list which are not reported by the network module
• In job execution, each and every retry operation is NOT reported until we have reached the maximum
• In the case of “port in use” don’t reset the LPD port parameters with default settings
• If we need to use login credentials for an operation, do more reporting if that fails since it is usually a password change in the system, that was not done in the RPM setup
• The UI’s method of copying jobs with the Ctrl key and mouse, is reinstated in the RPM service
• For ports, update the Status column if the port errors, when adding a new port

6.2.0.583 on 2025-01-27 (Release)

• When setting up an email job, the arguments for the email program were mistakenly suppressed. This is fixed.

6.2.0.582 on 2025-01-17 (Release)

• A customer was sending print jobs to an unreachable printer on their network; yet, RPM was mistakenly marking the job as complete. These particular print jobs were being sent via the telnet protocol. On review, the telnet protocol action should have returned a different status and we ultimately tightened handling in several locations.
• We updated the copyright dates in the various executable’s resource files

6.2.0.581 on 2025-01-14 (Release)

• If you had queues with job retention set but the jobs were already removed, we just issued a warning in the event log. This is fixed and jobs are removed on time.
• Furthermore, on startup, RPM will remove timers for jobs that no longer exist, as well as actions, devices, and queues.
• Working with text printing, we learned that it’s possible to crash RPM randomly if you do a lot of text printing. We had not tested extremes in this particular action. It turns out that the print spooler and drivers may be vulnerable when we set up the print job and close it out, so we have worked to protect those operations without forcing text printing to be strictly serialized. This also applies to raw printing and the device tester.
• Event log messages for print-related APIs now include the job number if applicable.

6.2.0.580 on 2024-12-12 (Release)

• On queues with more than one action, we discovered that about one time in a thousand a job would remain in the queue (when it should have been removed) and be marked as “complete”. This is fixed.
• Major fix to text printing:
  • The RPM text print action is supposed to fetch the “device mode” info from the printer that reflects the setup options the user performed in the UI, for that printer
  • RPM was failing to do that and was using the device defaults for that printer
  • furthermore, if you manually adjusted the printer settings in the UI, RPM was not refreshed properly
• RPM is now back to working the way it’s always worked. Furthermore, we added a “device mode info” class to show explicit information about the device setup, if you turn on diagnostic logging and are interested in that sort of thing
• If you removed a job manually, that was due to be retried, the Retry manager might report a variety of errors. This is fixed.
• Improved a variety of “failure” messages the service may send to the UI in case of error, mainly specifying a name or numeric ID. This is intended to facilitate trouble-shooting although nothing has been reported.

6.2.0.579 on 2024-11-22 (Beta)

• Discovered a race condition updating the Job object from two threads, prompting an extremely rare crash. We fixed this.
• Adding more explicit memory cleanup.
• This edition was released only as a beta to give a customers a chance to test a few of these issues

6.2.0.578 on 2024-11-15 (Release)

• In numerous modules in the RPM service and the database servicing programs, we replaced an older JSON module with a new one; this should lead to greater reliability and speed as well. Database operations are on average 30 to 40 percent faster
• Added a handler for database operations so if a SQL statement generates a fault, we report it and move on
• Updated the Job manager’s contribution to the report file, when RPM shuts down
• Identified where the license manager was reporting a binary character rather than a text status in the report file
• Worked to resolve several sources of memory leaks
• Fixed the telnet protocol timeout feature; if a connection remains open, RPM will now close the current file and submit it as a job if a timeout threshold is reached
• Attempting to resolve issues with placing files in a drop folder, with filenames including non-UTF-8 characters
• In the license manager:
  • updated the phone number
  • no longer check for live trial and folder watch within the logic for “is this a trial” and “is this licensed”
  • the live trial check is now called only in the regular trial logic

6.2.0.576 on 2024-09-16 (Release)

• In the text-to-PDF generator, we resolved an issue with the text markup fontCell command which prevented the successful creation of the PDF if this command was used (which is rare).

• The LPD protocol will record in the event log when someone assigns port 515 to a protocol other than LPD and when other ports use LPD.

• Implemented several changes to optimize the bulk reading of small config files, such as job metadata, and to address error messages
• Queue folders no longer tries to import zero-length files as a job
• When LPD parses job metadata, we now ensure that all the fields are either plain ASCII or UTF-8. Other binary characters are removed. What that means is:
  • we had a customer receiving jobs from a mainframe, which inexplicably added the hex character 3 to the jobname; trying to create a file with this name was unsuccessful
  • we then updated RPM to strip out non-ASCII characters
  • this failed when we sent a foreign language filename because many characters in UTF-8 are non-ASCII
  • we refined this operation to check for ASCII first, then for UTF-8, and finally scrub any text data that didn’t fit either of those (referring to filenames, not data content)
  • this all refers to the LPD protocol conversation between RPM and the print client
• We changed the way ASA logs the data it’s parsing so that (a) it doesn’t generate a blank line in the diagnostic log and (b) all control characters and other special characters are represented in the log
• Added the job ID to the diagnostic log for transforms and actions that didn’t already include it
• Email manager no longer generates a critical event when it tries to alert the user but doesn’t have a setup
• When a queue is created by an incoming print request, a critical event is no longer reported. An event message is logged instead

• We now add log messages for when users log in and log out.

• The biggest single change in this release is that we have added a new database interface program. The existing program, dbpipe, used a Windows feature called named pipes. For the majority of users, named pipes are very reliable. However, for some users, it was causing problems with their local “security” software. The new program is called “dbshm” and uses Windows shared memory. For more information, see the associated blog post linked above.
• When the license manager provides the support expiration date to RPM, it comes in text format. Unfortunately, the date was a US format, not internationalized, which caused RPM to use a wrong estimate for the number of remaining support days in the event log.
• RPM periodically purges the message log of old messages. We take care to leave messages associated with jobs that still exist, for instance, due to job retention or a suspended queue.
• The user interface includes an option to remove jobs at or below a certain size. We have updated telnet, appsocket, and the folder watcher to honor this setting and log when it happens. The LPD protocol already did this.
• The spool manager now updates the temp folder path when you change that setting in the user interface. You no longer have to restart the service for this to take effect.
• We discovered that if one module had an error on startup, RPM would not process the rest of the modules. This is fixed.
• On startup, the job launcher will mark devices as ready if they are associated with jobs that are ready to process. This should help prevent situations where jobs that should be running, don’t start after a service restart.
• User interface updates:
  1. no longer allow multiple critical event dialogs to open
  2. shuffled columns in the critical events dialog to hopefully increase clarity
  3. prevent the RPM temp folder from having the same path as the Windows temp folder

• When you activate the PCL to PDF module, we were displaying 4 event log messages. These were merged into one.
• We occasionally get reports of incomplete print jobs. In order to help track the problem, we have added another log message which shows the name of the incoming protocol and the data file size.
• The network manager in RPM now logs the local IP address interfaces. You can find this in the “report.txt” file in the RPM install folder.
• RPM uses “Local IP” in the naming template used widely in the user interface. We found this was not working as expected.
• We added a critical event notification for attempts to create a new queue in RPM, whether it was allowed or blocked. We include the client IP address to aid tracking and blocking.

6.2.0.510 on 2019-09-16 (Beta)

• We resolved a problem with the way we start the database interface program, dbpipe. It would stop as expected, then RPM would restart it as RPM exited. This is resolved. You would only notice this if you had enabled diagnostic logging in dbpipe.
• In certain situations, the program that sends data asynchronously to a printer would signal an error if it experienced a timeout. This would cause a job to be reprinted. If there was no error code associated with the timeout, we suppress the error now.
• We added the job ID to the diagnostic output of the programs that send LPR and IP traffic to printers, to help troubleshoot in case many such actions are running at the same time.
• The “text markup to PCL” transform now includes the username in the PJL commands.

6.2.0.496 on 2019-01-08 [blog]

• A customer reported that the copy to queue action failed if there was a data extraction transform in the same queue. This has been fixed. We’ve also made sure the “overrides” pulled from the print job by data extraction were included in the new job when it’s created.

• We extensively refactored the way we add jobs to the database and speed that process up considerably. This was while we were making sure leftover jobs from previous runs of RPM are recovered and added properly.

• If the license was in trial mode, then the license status message in the event log showed infinite time. This now shows the end of the trial period, as expected.

• If there was an error reading the license DLL, the user interface would not be able to start. RPM now recognizes this error and launches the license manager to correct the problem. RPM also generates a critical event.

• RPM now generates a critical event every 100,000 jobs, reminding the admin to do database maintenance and provides a link.

• One of the critical event handlers in RPM generated an exception for the database maintenance situation mentioned above. No one has ever seen this, but it was fixed.

• We revised how the LPD module handles two situations:

  1. when the user sends a print job to a queue that doesn’t exist, and “auto-create” is false
  2. when the user sends a print job to a queue that does exist but is disabled

  In both cases, RPM generates an error for the client. We tested this with the Microsoft LPR client, which acknowledged the error.

• We were able to generate occasional crashes in RPM. We traced this to the module which buffers message log entries. Once that was fixed, we sent over 300K jobs to RPM without incident.

• We included more identifying information in the job parameters field (see job properties in the user interface). We also included information from the copy to queue action which would help identify the origin of a particular job.

6.2.0.495 on 2018-12-13

• We stumbled upon a way to increase database performance when you are processing a large number of jobs. Every 5000 jobs we add, we do a database sweep. We’ve been doing this every night at midnight. The preliminary results are very encouraging.
• We also uncovered a job scheduling problem that may explain some of the file problems people have experienced but which are difficult to reproduce. It seemed to happen more frequently with larger jobs.

6.2.0.494 on 2018-12-10

• In order to stem infrequent but recurring file errors, we have now introduced the following changes to RPM:
  • when we write a file, we now wait until the file actually shows the same number of bytes on disk as the amount we actually wrote, so that the file system won’t under-report the file size
  • when we copy a file to the spool folder, we watch the result file until it shows the right number of bytes
  • we have updated some of the message log entries accordingly

We made 6.2.0.486 a release because it has the potential to fix several problems that have been issues for several customers. See the notes for 6.2.0.485 immediately below.

• The Print IP action was tested successfully sending tens of thousands of jobs, but when the remote computer (printer) failed to allow connections, the action errored the device but not the job. The symptom was that the worker tasks were tied up waiting for the job to finish, requiring a reboot. This is fixed.
• The Purge Database function in the user interface was not working correctly; this is fixed.
• Fixed an issue importing an XML configuration; the wrong information was placed in some of the database columns, which caused Queue Folders to exit on startup.

6.2.0.485 / 2018-10-02

• added a component that waits until Windows can actually find a file we just created, throughout the project; this should eliminate a variety of missing file, zero-length file errors when there is no real problem

• Lines ending in form feed that also had an embedded carriage return (not at the end but meant as an overprint operator) were not handled correctly. The symptom was that the portion of the line following the carriage return would be removed, but only on lines ending with a form feed.
• We no longer use the data file size in the LPR print request to “reserve” disk space. The Microsoft client misreports this, and was causing too many problems. We now have a system that dynamically watches available disk space and works across both LPR and telnet protocols, as well as queue copy, archive and filter actions.
• If the print client sends a full file path in the file name field, we now allow it and don’t report an RFC 4637 encoded string in queue status requests.

• When printing raw, if RPM can’t open the printer with full access, we try the partial “print-only” access. Some users don’t have full access to their printers; they won’t be able to set the print job user name or document name for the Windows spooler, but they’ll be able to print.

• Fixed a bug where, if you had multiple actions and “copies” were set to 1, when the first action completed the job would be marked as “complete”.
• Fixed issue with EBCDIC code page IBM1140 which would log an error and not complete.
• EBCDIC code page CP011 has also been added as a French Canadian variant on IBM037.
• If RPM prints landscape to a text printer that is set to portrait, the “top” (right) margin is now set correctly. It was too large.
• Another landscape related issue: if your print job was using characters per line, or lines per page, the text print action was using the wrong metrics. This is now fixed.

• The email action now supports the print job as the message body as an option, instead of attaching. Only plain text and HTML are supported for this.
• You can now use job data in the subject line of an email message. You’ll notice it has the same “Format” button that the attachment uses. The default subject is “” which you’ll probably want to change.
• We fixed a bug in text printing where underlined text could be moved to the end of the line.
• RPM now gets the MAC address(es) defined on your computer on startup, and checks them with what it has seen before. If the primary MAC address has changed, then most likely the licensing will also be affected. This will let you know when we detect this change. Changes in the IP address(es) are also noted.
• In the user interface import of registry files, if the “queue type” was raw and you had an SCS action, we now add a “strip markup” action. This is in keeping with the old RPM’s behavior. If you would rather print PCL to a printer than plain text, you might want to remove that strip markup transform and add a PCL transform.
• If Terminal Services is not running, or if the RPM process can’t query it, we’ll let you know that interactive processes will not run until this is corrected.

• The user interface now starts reliably. You should no longer see “license.get()” or related messages. If the service truly is not running, you’ll still see a message about that.
• If you sent a very large telnet job, it would fail with “Bad allocation” and start a new job. That is fixed.
• If you had a queue with a number of archived jobs, suspend the queue, send more jobs, then resume the queue, the archived jobs would reprint, not just the new jobs. That is fixed.
• If a queue had two or more copy actions, the filenames they used to copy to would be identical and occasionally an error “file exists” would happen. This is fixed. The filename now has the action instance id, which is unique. The other job properties are unaffected.
• The telnet protocol is supposed to direct jobs to a queue; if this queue was removed, the telnet protocol would signal an error. It now creates a queue named “telnet_” followed by the port number, and uses that. The queue will remain suspended until it is configured in the UI.
• The email job action is now more robust in handling multiple “to” addresses; also, addresses can be separated by comma or semicolon.
• The install program now handles the case where the currently installed version is the same as what you are trying to install; you can decide whether or not to go forward.
• Importing a configuration from the old RPM could result in an internal error in the UI. The symptom was that only some of the queues were created. This is resolved.
• Addressed contention due to parallel updates in the RPM database, for instance, two completed print jobs updating the device
• The “archive to folder” action is now logged at normal detail.

• If you tried to import a configuration file from previous versions of RPM and the font was corrupt, the UI would exit when you opened the “text markup” dialog. Now it substitutes Courier New size 12 instead.
• Some users reported that the UI would exit when making a list of network printers for the raw print action.

• If you had a suspended queue, with jobs that were not held, changing the “suspend” setting would not cause the jobs to print.

• We have dropped the requirement that the logged in user must be an administrator, in order to change things in RPM. However, you can still enforce that requirement if you want. You have to be logged in as an admin user in order to set that.

• In the character set conversion transform, if you were converting to UTF-8, the transform would occasionally show an error and incorrectly report it for the input code page. Both problems were fixed.
