RPM Remote Print Manager 9X Version 2.3 Revs Up

Version 2.3 Extends Page Processing and Interoperability Features

Idaho Falls, Idaho - October 26, 1999 - Brooks Internet Software, Inc. announces the newest release of RPM Remote Print Manager® (RPM) for Windows® 95/98. RPM version 2.3 allows users to customize and control the processing of print jobs received on a TCP/IP network from hosts such as mainframes, AS/400's, UNIX, and Linux systems.

"Users of legacy systems and heterogeneous networks have enjoyed the benefits of RPM from the beginning, such as queue control, flexible printing options, working with other programs, and internationalization," says Dave Brooks, President.

"Our clients are using RPM now to print financial reports, checks, statements, bar codes and labels, and countless other document types. Now with the release of version 2.3, we can better support the network printing needs of our diverse client base."

RPM's page processing enhancements give the user more document style and formatting options. Version 2.3 allows users to fit text output to a page and select the most readable font. Additionally, if a user needs to print a wide format report, RPM allows them, with a few keystrokes, to specify landscape and scale for the page output. The program also handles a greater variety of host data formats enabling end-users to print without custom conversions.

RPM's interoperability improvements include the ability to receive data from a greater number of programs that follow the loosely defined LPR standard. New output options include duplicate filename handling, the ability to assign filenames using job data such as date/time, user, and title, and other options identified by key third-party integrators.

These features are added to RPM's already extensive options to complement other vendor products. A few examples of RPM's custom processing support include using specific filenames for a monitor program and passing job information for a form-generating program.

Other RPM 9X 2.3 Software Enhancements

  • Extensive Y2K stress testing using widely recognized critical dates to support continued performance.
  • "Auto Create Queue" for faster network configuration. RPM automatically creates a print queue once a job is received, reducing the time network administrators spend searching for misnamed queues.
  • Enhanced log with sort capabilities for a more comprehensive view of job processing. Data conversions have been added, and the log can be sorted on message severity, queue or job, date/time, and text message. This enables technical staff to more effectively troubleshoot and users to identify minute-by-minute the status of their print jobs.

RPM is the only product in its category that supports both single- and double-byte characters for international processing. Users can publish documents in any language supported by Windows. RPM helps the user select the correct fonts for the character set used. Among the many languages supported are Chinese, Japanese, and Eastern European.

The program features multiple named print queues, each independently configured for printer selection and print processing. It can pass print data to another program or write it to disk for archiving or other purposes. ASCII data can be handled in formats used on business systems from mainframes to Linux. Text handling is unique in that options include lines per inch, characters per inch, choice of font used on the selected printer, and complete printer setup. RPM translates EBCDIC data and converts SCS to ASCII. In text mode, it preserves the SCS formatting instructions, such as font changes and character positioning.
