AS/400 print job stays in a *RDY status

Q: When sending a job from the AS/400, that job immediately goes into a ready (*RDY) status. The job is never sent to RPM Remote Print Manager® ("RPM") and no messages are logged in RPM related to this print job. In the AS/400, the *RDY status never changes to *SND.

A: This is a result of the AS/400 remote writer not running. To start the remote writer, issue the command STRRMTWTR outq_name. The remote writer can also be configured to start automatically after making any changes to the OUTQ configuration using the Change Output Queue (CHGOUTQ) command. To do so, follow these instructions.

  1. From an AS/400 command prompt, issue this command, substituting your OUTQ name where appropriate: ENDWTR outq name *IMMED.
  2. Wait 15 seconds, then issue this command, again substituting your OUTQ name where appropriate: CHGOUTQ outq name. Press F4 to prompt. If you press Enter, start again from step 1.
  3. Press F9 to view all parameters, then locate the Writers to autostart parameter. Set this value to 1.
  4. Press Enter to accept the changes. In the future, any changes to the OUTQ will also restart the remote writer; there is no need to issue the STRRMTWTR command.
